Looking up I see the line has died down some, waving my hand at the security guard, I motion him to give me a few minutes to regain strength in my writing hand.
Tony Rich, "I get it, Dusty Rhodes was an ICON, he was a legend that impacted millions in this business, including myself. But just because you have respect for the guy, just because you watched his tapes and know all his quirky little catchphrases, is not a good enough of a reason to compete in the match. At the end of the day, Dusty Rhodes is not going to be at ringside cheering you on, it is going to be YOU in that ring, YOU and your abilities that are either going to break you or take you to the next level.
However, I have to thank everyone who is going to be involved in the Dusty Rhodes Invitational, for reminding me how funny this business can be. I swear, if I know nothing about this business and took most of your promotion for this match at face value, I would think that most of you were trying to run for Miss America or something, or trying to be cast on a reboot of the Golden Girls.
Now I know you what your thinking, who is this kid, coming into Golden Gate and acting like he can tell me anything. And the truth is you may have a point, but set your ego to the side for a moment and realize that just because I have never stepped foot in your ring, does not mean that I have never stepped foot in A ring or that I have never been in a big match situation. I have, more than I can count.
Being away from the ring for over a year, has made me realize what is important in this business. It is not about the championships, it is not even about the wins, it's about what you leave as your legacy. You think when a Glacier dies that he is going to have a memorial show for him, how about Gilbert?, the answer is NO, because the brutal truth of the matter is they are a footnote in pro wrestling history. It's only the people like a Dusty Rhodes that mean anything at the end of the day."
Sometimes the harshest truths are the hardest to swallow.
Tony Rich, "I look around at the men who have entered this match and I see a lot of talented individuals. Some familiar names and some not so much, but every single one of them has a very good shot at winning this match.
The problem is I see through them all, they all come up short, where it counts.
This match is like the club scene and that big win that hangs in front of all of us is the hottest girl in the room.
BURAI walks up to the girl in the club...no wait a minute...BURAI does not walk up to the girl in the club, that would be Bradford. This is because BURAI does not know how to deliver, super talented but just can't seem to pull the trigger. He needs his wingman in his corner, without his wingman, without the smoke and mirrors, what is he? He is turned away, not given a second look.
Then you have Connor Kelly, the young lion, the man with everything to prove and has all the tools to do so, BUT he is a virgin, and because of this you can just sense the fear coming off of him. Don't get me wrong, he sounds confident, but it's fake and it shows. In ways this is very refreshing, when I first started in this business, I was a lot like Connor Kelly, the main difference being of course that there was nothing fake about my confidence. What I said I meant, and when I said I was going to win in a big match situation, I did and nothing has changed except 10 years.
The Black Fly and Loose Cannon's of the world, are what make situations like this fun. They are the types that are around for a good laugh but really are no threat. They try way to hard to impress, which ends up just making them look like tools and throwing them off their game. Which in return, opens the playing field, for people like me."
Pointing over to the corner, there are a couple of people standing by the wall.
Tony Rich, "If I have yet to mention you, that is because you belong in the last category. You, my friends, are the wall flowers. Whether it be because you're on the fence about joining us at the party or your simply speaking so softly that no one even bothers to hear you. Either way, you're on the wall.
This is not to say that you can't get it off it, there is still time, the night is still young."
Motioning over to the security guard, I give him the cue that I am ready to sign some more photos and tits as the scene fades to black.
